Pixabay is always my first stop when I’m looking for a specific image. All their images are CC0, so I know that I can freely use them. And their search feature makes it really easy to find exactly what I’m looking for.

Just keep two things in mind when using Pixabay:

  1. The first row of images is usually sponsored stock images. Don’t get excited if you see one you like, because it won’t be free. Everything after the first row of sponsored images is CC0 though.
  2. You need to register an account to download full resolution photos. This process is pretty painless, though. And there’s no money involved.

Unsplash

 

Unsplash is another one of my favorite image sources. It’s a completely different experience than Pixabay, though. It’s all about quality over quantity. You don’t have nearly as big of a selection as Pixabay, but every single image on Unsplash is gorgeous.

If you just need an eye-catching background image, you won’t go wrong with Unsplash. If you need to find a very specific image, Unsplash probably isn’t your best option.

Public Domain Pictures

 

Public Domain Pictures is another great option if you want access to a huge collection of images. I’m not sure exactly how many images they have in their database, but you can find lots of results for some pretty random queries, so I’d imagine it’s a large number.

The only area I think it falters is the interface. While totally usable, it’s not nearly as nice as Pixabay’s interface. And like other large collections, you’ll have to wade through some low-quality images to get to the good stuff.

Wikimedia Commons

 

If you’re willing to dig through the almost 34 million free images in Wikimedia Commons, you can find some absolute gems. While the images are well-tagged and categorized, the fact that there’s 34 million of them can still make it a bit overwhelming to find what you want.

Death to the Stock Photo

 

Death to the Stock Photo sends out monthly emails with brand spankin’ new images. I know you might find the requirement to enter your email slightly annoying, but I actually think it’s a nice feature. It ensures that the images are somewhat limited in distribution, which makes them less likely to be overused.

All Death to the Stock Photo’s images are beautiful, so you’re getting some amazing quality shots. The only downside is you don’t have control over what comes to your inbox, so you can never know for sure if you’ll be able to use their images.

They also offer a premium membership if you want even more image goodness.

PicJumbo

 

PicJumbo is a good jack-of-all-trades for images. You can search by tags, browse the latest images, or go for what’s popular. Unlike some of the bigger image searches, you don’t have to wade through many duds on PicJumbo. The images are good quality far more often than not.

You can also sign up for a newsletter to get alerted whenever they add new images. And they offer a premium plan which gives you access to even more images. The premium plan definitely isn’t a necessity to get value from the site, though.

Some of the images you find in your search results will come from the premium collection, so be aware that you won’t necessarily be able to use everything you see.

What Is The Difference Between a Child Theme and a Premium Divi Child Theme

What Is A Child Theme?

“A child theme is a theme that inherits the functionality and styling of another theme, called the parent theme.” – WordPress Codex

Relating to WordPress in its entirety, not just Elegant Themes and the Divi theme, a child theme is a series of files comprised of code that is packaged together.These files mimic and pull functionality from the files present in a parent theme.

parent theme is basically any theme purchased via a marketplace, vendor or similar. In the case of Elegant Themes, both Divi and Extra would be deemed as parent themes.

These (parent) themes are essentially a series of dozens of files (typically scripted using the PHP language), each which interchange functionality between each other, and also work in unison with the main WordPress core files – as downloaded from the WordPress.org repository.
If you were to create and customize the look and feel of a website using only the parent theme, you’d eventually run into problems.Parent themes are updated regularly by their respective marketplace or vendor developers. Whether it’s to keep up with innovations or simply to fix bugs, these updates ensure that the theme itself will run at its optimum, all of the time.

While theme updates aren’t bad, they can disrupt certain functional or stylistic changes that you may have made to your WordPress website using CSS or PHP customizations.
CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) is a markup language that is used to style out various HTML-based web elements. Often, CSS styling is added to the style.css file of the WordPress child theme. The theme’s stylesheet is found by navigating to Appearance > Editor and selecting the style.css file.In the case of Divi websites, there is a Custom CSS feature at the very bottom of the Divi Theme Options console, as well as the Editor.

These CSS edits may require quite a bit of knowledge, and can often encounter a bit of testing and tweaking, and generally, can take hours to execute.In the event that a parent theme has an update, a WordPress website that isn’t running a child theme, runs the risk of having each and every line of CSS code overwritten.

Boom! Just like that, all of your hard work will disappear instantaneously, and your one-of-a-kind, unique looking website will return to the default “factory settings” of the original theme.

To remedy this, the creators and contributors of WordPress developed the child theme functionality that would allow for developers to create CSS site edits safely.A child theme consists of a style.css file and possibly a series of other code files that pull from the functionality of the parent theme (i.e. main theme purchased from a marketplace or vendor).

The child theme is a completely separate entity to the parent theme. It merely adopts the same functionality and allows the developer the capability to make custom changes and functions.

A child theme must include a particular series of files, most importantly the style.css file for CSS edits, and the functions.php file. This file must include a specific line of code (with the WordPress function enqueue_parent_style) in order for it to register (or enqueue) the parent file.

Once this is done, any additional files added to the child theme directory will override the files presented in the parent theme package.

WordPress works in such a way that it first looks to run the files present in the child theme and executes the code it finds. Then, if there are no child theme files present, WordPress will move on to the parent theme file package and search for the respective files and code.

It is in this manner that developers can add CSS to their website without the threat of parent theme updates overwriting their code work.

Any code entered into the style.css file in the child theme will be read and run by WordPress, leaving the style.css file in the parent theme to update independently.

In summary, if you’re going to be making changes to your website using either PHP or CSS, or, if you’d just like the peace of mind, use a child theme when developing your WordPress website.

What is the Difference Between a Child Theme and a Premium Child Theme

Child themes come in two forms: a standard (or blank) child theme and a premium child theme.In a nutshell, a standard child theme (often referred to as a blank child theme) gives you the nuts and bolts for operation, while a premium child theme will include bells and whistles too.

Your selection between whether you should use a standard or premium child theme will essentially come down to your website’s needs requirements, but, more on that later.

First, let’s define the difference between a Divi child theme and a premium Divi child theme.

Divi Child Themes

A standard or blank Divi child theme is comprised of a series of core files that will enqueue the functionality of the parent theme in order to protect any site changes you may choose to make.Once you’ve installed a standard or blank child theme, you’re free to use the Divi Builder as per normal, and, in the event that you add additional code, it won’t be overwritten by theme updates. Also, using a child theme will make sure that the core code files of the parent theme will not be tinkered with.

To use a standard or blank Divi child theme, you can either download one for free using the Divi Space Child Theme Maker or purchase the Aspen Roots child theme which adds a few premium functionality features.

Alternately, you can create your own child theme from scratch. For this, you’ll need either a Text Editor program or an IDE (Integrated Development Environment) such as Brackets or Sublime.

How to Create Your Own Divi Child Theme

A child theme is comprised of two core files: functions.php and styles.css.The functions.php file will signal to WordPress that there is a child theme present and that it piggybacks off of a particular parent theme. Open up your text editor or IDE, copy and paste in the following code and save the file as functions.php.

Next, move onto the CSS file. Create a new document in either your text editor or IDE and save it as style.css. Copy and paste in the following code:

This little bit of code is crucial as it both offers information regarding the nature of your child theme.The ‘Template’ designation instructs WordPress as to which theme to use as the parent. This file allows you to keep all of your CSS in one central location, and too, will protect the code work should the parent theme (Divi) update.

Adding an image to your child theme is recommended, but not an essential. Should you wish to do so, create the artwork with the dimensions of 880 px x 660 px and save it as screenshot.jpg or .png. After theme activation, this image will reflect as the display for the child theme in the Appearance > Themes console.

Once you’ve got all of these files together, add them into one folder and rename it accordingly, something relating to the company or business website you’re building.Compress the folder and upload the .zip file to the Themes > Add New console on the WordPress backend.

Once the upload is complete, Activate the theme and voila! You’re officially running a child theme with your Divi website.

Premium Divi Child Themes

Premium Divi child themes are created by third-party developers and are purchased directly from their respective online stores.
If you’re using the Divi and/or Extra theme, you’ve got a plethora of premium child themes to choose from as a number of independent Divi developers and development agencies have taken on the responsibility to develop premium child themes for the global Divi community.These premium child themes offer value, for a price.

Here, almost aspect of both web design and development is already complete. From layout design to element stylingfont group, and color selection, and in most cases, animations too, practically every detail of web design and development is taken care of.

If, on the other hand, you have time at your disposal, or are determined to create your very own piece of the web property, then start from scratch, but use a standard or blank Divi child theme before you begin.

Even though premium Divi child themes come at a price, they’re a small investment compared to the costs of custom website development. Where custom, self-hosted WordPress websites can cost thousands of dollars to build, using child themes comes at a fraction of the price, and too, will often come with support services in case you get stuck.

1. Install and activate the AMP plugin

The first thing to do is install and activate the WordPress AMP plugin. The official AMP plugin is free and was developed by the team at Automattic.

This plugin works as a base plugin and will automatically generate AMP-compatible versions of all the posts on your websites – note, not the pages. You can view the AMP version by adding /amp/ to the end of the post URL. In order to convert your pages to AMP, you will need to install an additional plugin – AMP for WP – Accelerated Mobile Pages.

2. Customize AMP pages

You can customize your AMP template for it to look like your existing website. This will include editing the CSS of your AMP template, though there are limited customization options available in the base AMP plugin.
